The Words The River-Merchant's Wife Said

We read this poem in class and
One line stood out to me:

I desired my dust to be mingled with yours
Forever and forever and forever.

Would you think me a cynic-
Call me Negative Nancy, the glass-half-empty-girl,
Or some sort of raging feminist-
If I told you that I don't think I could ever
Ever
Ever
Feel that way about another human being?

I promise you it's not nearly as glamorous as all that.
No, all it really boils down to is
Cowardice.
